In this workaday, gotta have it right now, movin' on to something else world we live in these daze, it's tough to catch let alone keep, people's attention.  Fortunately, I don't have to make up these stories, they're already there, AND. THEY. ARE. GREAT !!  I just have to tell them.  It helps to have a decent handle on programming, but the stories are the real stars of the show.  Keep it short & they will stay ( and keep coming back ... ).

B-Side Trax:

A new concept for radio: a 6-minute featurette that airs once a day, five days a week.  Besides digging up songs unburnt, there's also a fascinating, 30-second story behind each track. Because it plays to the 'Short Attention-Span Theater' we all have nowadays, the tune-out factor is next to zero !!

Episodes - B-Side Trax - Week of AUG 7th: There Are Those Who Tell Stories & There Are Storytellers - B-Side Trax ...

I like to think that I'm the latter. There are so many bands who have gone thru' so much hardship.  People you know, their kids, people who know the people who some people you know may know.  All trying to make it & playing their hearts out ...

Somebody needs to take their stories and pass them on.  I love Music, I'm so grateful it came into my life, I need to give it to others !  Consider this my gift to current generations & those who follow them.  Music soothes the savage beast & someone needs to be the curator.  Tell a story ...

There's an old saying " Those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it".  Well, there's a lot of truth there, but also, there's a lot of music from the past that still deserves to be played.  We can't really make a living at it in large doses, but as 'spice', you can really liven up a day-part with an interesting featurette ...

Nuke Tesing - Las Vegas.png

Everybody's looking for it.  They all want it.  In some ways it's hard to find, in others, not so much.  "CONTENT". Look at the major outlets today, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, they're changing the way we consume it, but the fact is, they're all driving their audiences to create it for them.

Radio needs content too.  In the 40's people would sit rapt in front of their radios to listen to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater or Boris Karloff.  Today it's too much to expect to hold their attention for that long, but, you can hold it for 6 minutes ...

We all know that the most popular stations play the most popular music.  So what happens when all of the stations are playing the same songs ?  You can tighten up your format & streamline your quarter hours etc, but in the end, aren't you really just rearranging chairs on the deck of the Titanic ?

Nowadays, talent & content are King ( or Queen if you will ).  You need to have something the other stations don't to stand apart, and I think I have just the answer for you ...

Episodes - Episodes - B-Side Trax - Week of JUL 3rd: Is It Possible To Be Everything To Everyone ? B-Side Trax ...

Those who try to be everything to everyone will ultimately become nothing to no one.  You have to stand for something.  That doesn't mean you can't do what you do well, but the listener won't be fooled if you water things down too much.

This is a retro-alternative show, plain & simple. 80's & 90's centric, we leak back into the 70's & cross into this century every so often.  Each song is at least 10 years old and did I mention that every one of these retro songs comes with its own really fascinating story ??

Episodes - Episodes - B-Side Trax - Week of JUN 25th: I Don't Play 'Stump The Chump' ... B-Side Trax !

My goal is not to be the smartest guy in the room & play songs that nobody has ever heard ( well, once in a while maybe ... ).  The goal here is to come out of an interesting story & have the listener say, "wow, I haven't heard that song since college !"

We can't make a living playing obscure tunes as an ongoing format, but, when you take those lesser-played songs that people remember & combine them with a fascinating story, you have a mini-feature.  A feature that will hold the interest of the audience.  A feature that your station's sales dept can sell as a feature.

Episodes - Episodes - B-Side Trax - Week of JUN 18th: Play the 'Non-Hits' & They Will Come ... B-Side Trax !

We in the radio biz know why stations play the hits.  In the real business world, it's all about the numbers and the numbers must add up in the bottom line.  It would be extremely tough for a station to survive say, just playing (gulp) B-Sides ...

However, when we turn those lesser-played tunes into their own feature and add to that, fascinating stories behind the music, all of a sudden they take on a whole new life. They even allow stations to add 23 or so "Deep Cuts" to their format without touching their playlists. If you think about it, it also gives stations a program that their sales departments can sell to their local clients as a feature !

With the eyes & ears of love, I tell the stories behind these great bands, albums & songs.  I also do my best to keep it short, after all, I just want the listener to stay plugged in to hear if they've figured out what the song/band is ...

Episodes - Episodes - B-Side Trax - Week of JUN 4th: Programming - Yeah ( it's kinda ) Important ... B-Side Trax !

Here's a question:  Is programming really important if I'm only playing one song a day 5 days a week ?  You're damn right it is !

It's tough to program a station no matter what the format. You need have hit factor / artist separation / AQR & Cume considerations / talent, plus a host of other factors to balance.

As a 1-song vignette, I don't have to worry about those dynamics as much & yet, song selection is vital.  The stories carry each show, but the songs & artists carry the weeks & the longevity of the show itself. There's has to be a balance - hard & soft, 80's & 90's, male & female, big band & 1-hit wonder and oh yeah, it helps if the audience recognizes the songs.  Most of 'em anyway ....

Episodes - Episodes - B-Side Trax - Week of MAY 29th: The 500th "B-Side" Show Will Air This Friday !!

Nothing good ever comes easy.  The same can be said for this show.  What started out (in theory) as a 1-hour, Classic Rock weekend feature, has grown to be a multi-city vignette that is aired in just about every important day part.  You start with an idea and like a whittler you hone the presentation ( both the on-air product as well as your target marketing )  as you go, never losing sight of the end game.

I listen to the feedback from my affiliates and if it makes sense, I tweak a little here & there to improve the product.  I'm true to my word, if I say the show will be delivered on a certain day & time, it is.  Trust and consistency are key, you don't get to 500 shows without them.  A certain amount of relentlessness is helpful too ...

Oh yes, and love.  I love radio, I love music and I love adding more B-Side Family members !

B-Side Trax:

A new concept for radio: a 6-minute featurette that airs once a day, five days a week.  Besides digging up songs unburnt, there's also a fascinating story behind each track. The tune-out factor is next to zero !!

Here's what aired last week on B-Side Alternative and a link to a recent show:

Follow Me - Uncle Cracker / Click To Play Show

Monday:               Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana
Tuesday:               Never Let Me Down Again - Farmer Boys
Wednesday:         Red Skies - The Fixx
Thursday              Follow Me - Uncle Cracker
Friday:                 O L' Amour - Erasure

Many stations use this vignette as a lead-in or the centerpiece for their retro or flashback shows. Some use it as a stand-alone or even combine each week's shows to form a 30-minute weekend retro feature. That flexibility is a benefit for individual stations to use to their advantage.

Here's a week on B-Side Classic Rock, plus a show link:

Vegas - Night Shot 2 - Paris:Fountain .jpg

It was 1980 and I was working at a fish farm in Miami ( yes, there really is such a thing ).  I wanted to get into radio, but even then I knew without any training or an uncle in the biz, it wasn't likely.  So I moved to Ft Myers, got a job dj'ing in a bar & in less than a month I was on the air at AM/FM/TV combo WINK. 4 years there (plus a cup of coffee at WRCC) & it was off to the Navy & beautiful San Diego.

Post-Navy, I did a couple of years of traffic at Shadow Broadcasting. During that time I started  drafting a Classic Rock show called "Off The Beaten Trax".  It was designed as a 1-hour show similar to B-Side without all the back stories. I had the epiphany while I was on the golf course to go to 1-song, 5 days a week with "Behind The Music-esque" stories.  When I went to trademark the show, "OTBT" was already taken, "B-Side Trax" however, was not.  Funny how things work out ...
