Only 12 Days Left To "Add a Side of The B-Side" !!

Vegas - Night Shot 2 - Paris:Fountain .jpg

It was 1980 and I was working at a fish farm in Miami ( yes, there really is such a thing ).  I wanted to get into radio, but even then I knew without any training or an uncle in the biz, it wasn't likely.  So I moved to Ft Myers, got a job dj'ing in a bar & in less than a month I was on the air at AM/FM/TV combo WINK. 4 years there (plus a cup of coffee at WRCC) & it was off to the Navy & beautiful San Diego.

Post-Navy, I did a couple of years of traffic at Shadow Broadcasting. During that time I started  drafting a Classic Rock show called "Off The Beaten Trax".  It was designed as a 1-hour show similar to B-Side without all the back stories. I had the epiphany while I was on the golf course to go to 1-song, 5 days a week with "Behind The Music-esque" stories.  When I went to trademark the show, "OTBT" was already taken, "B-Side Trax" however, was not.  Funny how things work out ...

Introducing B-Side Trax:

A new concept for radio: a 6-minute featurette that airs once a day, five days a week.  Besides digging up songs unburnt, there's also a fascinating story behind each track. The tune-out factor is next to zero !!

Here's what aired last week on B-Side Alternative and a link to a recent show:

(Tribute) - Tenacious D / Click To Play Show

Monday:                Goodbye Goodbye - Oingo Boingo
Tuesday:                (Tribute) - Tenacious D
Wednesday:          I Hate Everything About You - 3 Days Grace
Thursday               Lost Again - Dance Hall Crashers
Friday:                   Pretty Noose - Soundgarden

Many stations use this vignette as a lead-in or the centerpiece for their retro or flashback shows. Some use it as a stand-alone or even combine each week's shows to form a 30-minute weekend retro feature. That flexibility is a benefit for individual stations to use to their advantage.

Episodes - B-Side Trax - Week of APR 16th:  Anatomy of The B-Side", Plus, 4 Days & 3 Glorious Nights in Vegas !

B-ST - Vegas Contest Banner 2 APR.png

"Add a Side of The B-Side" is in full swing.  Call your B-Side rep to get your station in !

Most of us in the radio biz did not get here by accident.  We got here by virtue of a deep love & respect for the medium.  We grew up listening and then deliberately became part of the magic.

B-Side Trax is a product of that love & respect.  We all know why so many of today's songs are overplayed and even crossover to other formats - it's survival.  With ever-increasing competition & tiny margins for error, programmers do not have the luxury to take chances.

As a retro show featuring those lesser-played ( but still great ) tunes, that can't seem to find a place on today's format-driven radio, B-Side Alternative features songs at least 10 years old, is 80's & 90's centric while adding an occasional tune from the 70's and/or the 21st Century.  When you factor in the great stories 'behind the music', it's a great way to bring in 23 unique songs every month without touching your library.

Episodes - B-Side Trax Week of JAN 29th: This Week's Thoughts From The B-Side ...

In the years I've been doing this show, I've always kept it short & sweet.  We all seem to have a short attention span these days, so we don't have a lot of extra time to waste.  Bingo !  Get in, get to the point, make it interesting & get out !!  Our listeners are the same way, they have busy lives too.  That said, everybody likes to be entertained, plus it's nice to have something to look forward to each day.  It's also nice to hear songs that didn't get played to death on the radio ...

Enter B-Side Trax:

A new concept for radio; a roughly 6-minute featurette that airs once a day, five days a week.  Besides digging up songs unburnt, there's also a fascinating story behind each track ! The tune-out factor is zero.

B-Well,

Mike

B-Side Trax Episodes - Week of JAN 22nd: Do You Think These 5 B-Sides Might Work in Your Format ?

I program each week's shows months in advance making minor changes as I go.  The idea is to select songs that are engaging, but weren't overplayed during their time.  I also look for balance, some hard, some soft, some big names, some 1-hit wonders, 80's, 90's male, female etc.  While presenting a show featuring 'deep tracks', one of the inherent dangers is to go too deep, too often.  You can play a wholly unfamiliar song occasionally, but if the listener feels they can't relate, they will find something more interesting.  I send these to you each week Mr/Ms Program Director in the hope that you too will find one or two that are interesting' enough to add to your rotation ...

B-Side Trax:

A new concept for radio; a roughly 6-minute featurette that airs once a day, five days a week.  Besides digging up songs that didn't get burnt out, there's also an interesting story behind each track ! The tune-out factor is next to zero.

B-Side Trax Episodes - Week of JAN 15th: Why Has The B-Side Never Lost One Single Affiliate ?

It's the stories !  Yes the music is good, but the tales behind the bands, albums & songs are just too fascinating to tune out.  By keeping it short, sweet & playing to the short attention span we all seem to have nowadays, the show stays relevant & interesting.  6 minutes a day, could gain you a few ratings points and a stable feature to build a quarter hour (or more) on ...

Welcome to the B-Side:

The show features songs that, while not totally obscure, were less played, refreshingly diverse and compelling in the array of songs and artists, PLUS an interesting story the listener probably never knew !  A once-a-day program, roughly 6 minutes long, the show delivers a roughly 45 second story, the song itself, and done.  The tune-out factor is next to zero.
