My goal is not to be the smartest guy in the room & play songs that nobody has ever heard ( well, once in a while maybe ... ). The goal here is to come out of an interesting story & have the listener say, "wow, I haven't heard that song since college !"
We can't make a living playing obscure tunes as an ongoing format, but, when you take those lesser-played songs that people remember & combine them with a fascinating story, you have a mini-feature. A feature that will hold the interest of the audience. A feature that your station's sales dept can sell as a feature.
Welcome to B-Side Trax:
A new concept for radio: a 6-minute featurette that airs once a day, five days a week. Besides digging up songs unburnt, there's also a fascinating, 30-second story behind each track. Because it plays to the 'Short Attention-Span Theater' we all have nowadays, the tune-out factor is next to zero !!
Here's what aired last week on B-Side Alternative and a link to a recent show:
Monday: Bitchin' Camaro - Dead Milkmen
Tuesday: Connected - Stereo MC's
Wednesday: Drops of Jupiter - Train
Thursday Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
Friday: Again - Alice in Chains
Many stations use this vignette as a lead-in or the centerpiece for their retro or flashback shows. Some use it as a stand-alone or even combine each week's shows to form a 30-minute weekend retro feature. That flexibility is a benefit for individual stations to use to their advantage.
Here's a week on B-Side Classic Rock, plus a show link:
Monday: Mystify Me - INXS
Tuesday: What's On My Mind - Kansas
Wednesday: Living in The USA - Steve Miller Band
Thursday Slick Black Cadillac - Quiet Riot
Friday: We Gotta Get Out of This Place - The Animals
