Believe it or not, this band tried to get a local Birmingham pub to sponsor them in their early years. The pub, Mitchells & Butlers, politely declined, but the band carried on anyway.
16 studio albums & a Hall of Fame career later, the band did just fine. The pub seems to be doing okay too, but I’ll bet they’d like another shot at that sponsorship ….
Oh yeah, by the way – Merry Christmas !!

It’s true, Chris used the money to put an advertisement in a local sweet shop window seeking a guitarist for a band he didn’t yet have. Only one person responded, but it was enough. The duo were hailed as “the heirs to Lennon and McCartney‘s throne” in the early 80’s.
To coin an old phrase, ‘if you’re not cheatin’ you’re not tryin’. I’m sure he’s been forgiven by his dear Mum by now ( I hope ) ….

Initially struggling to get gigs in their hometown of Tallahassee, they set up their own shows in family restaurants. Wanting to play a ‘real show’, they convinced a local club owner that they could bring at least 200 people. He liked what he heard and agreed to manage the band &

It’s true. Emily & her boyfriend were just driving to a concert when they picked up a poor guy whose bike had a flat tire & had forgotten his cell phone. Turns out he was the star of the show ! Their kindness netted them front-row tickets, backstage passes and an invitation to dinner. It pays to be nice to strangers … Sometimes …

It’s true. Even though he was already a star in his own right, he decided to take a gig behind the bar for, as he put it, ‘a reality check’. And just in case you didn’t know, so did Christina Applegate. The first band to ever perform there was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
I do love history & the stories behind the songs, bands & albums. Perhaps your listeners would too !

This feature was a labour of love for many years before I ever produced the first show. It was originally intended to be a 1-hour, Classic Rock show under the moniker ‘Off The Beaten Trax’. So imagine my dismay when I went to trademark the show & found that the name had already been taken …
As the saying goes, ‘the show must go on” and so it does. New name, new format & this Friday, my 600th show will air. Many thanks to those who have & continue to support it. My how time flies when you’re having fun !

My 1st shows were these two; Chicago & Grand Funk. I am so thankful for every live show I ever went to (well, most of ’em) & I wish that I’d gone to so many more !! Music has been such a huge part of my life & I suspect that it’s been the same for many of you.

I don’t try to outsmart my audience. I know a fair amount about music, but if I play songs that they’ve never heard, I’ll have a very short-lived show indeed. I want them to know the songs, I also NEED them to know the songs, it makes the stories that much more relevant.
Even though I don’t reveal the band/song until the end, if my audience knows it’s a song they probably know, they’re more likely to tune in again & again. And THAT, is what we in radio call, ‘The End Game’ …

I was at Radio Summit this year when it hit me, I’ve been involved with radio for over 38 years ! Now we all know that our beloved medium is under attack from all sides, but for the kids in my hood, we all listened to the radio. It’s where we heard new music, got our news & aligned with our favorite personalities.
Radio ain’t dead yet, the key is content. Just keep it relevant & interesting. It all starts with a good song & a good story …
