Do You Remember The Old-School Focus Groups ? B-Side Trax …

Me Too.  You’d have 30-40 people in a room with cafeteria seating.  Each seat would have a pair of headphones, a pencil & a questionnaire asking things like; do you like this song ?  Do you not like it ? Have you heard this song too much ? Have you not heard it enough ? The songs compiled from these focus groups are what the consultants then used to direct their clients as to which songs were ‘vetted & recommended’ for their client station’s 400-song formats …

This is one of the main reasons why we hear many of the same songs on the radio today, for better & for worse.  So what about those other songs, the ones that made it to radio, but didn’t get or stay in the ‘A’ rotation for long.  It doesn’t necessarily mean those songs are bad, just not as popular.  Now add an interesting story, plus a refreshing nostalgia factor & what do you have …

B-Side Trax:

A new concept for radio: a 6-minute featurette that airs once a day, five days a week.  Besides digging up songs unburnt, there’s also a fascinating, 30-second story behind each track. Because it plays to the’Short Attention-Span Theater’ we all have nowadays, the tune-out factor is next to zero !!
Here’s what aired last week on B-Side Alternative and a link to a recent show:

Words – Missing Persons / Click To Play Show

Monday:                 Words – Missing Persons
Tuesday:                 Birdhouse in Your Soul – They Might Be Giants
Wednesday:          Sister – The Nixons
Thursday              The Reflex – Duran Duran
Friday:                   Ruby Soho – Rancid

Many stations use this vignette as a lead-in or the centerpiece for their retro or flashback shows. Some use it as a stand-alone or even combine each week’s shows to form a 30-minute weekend retro feature. That flexibility is a benefit for individual stations to use to their advantage.

Here’s a week on B-Side Classic Rock, plus a show link:
